Relocating from another state has a lot of moving parts. Here's the checklist we walk our clients through — save it and work through it in order.
2–3 months before
- Narrow down 2–4 communities (start with our community guides and videos).
- Get pre-approved with a lender — and compare builder incentives if you're considering new construction.
- If you're selling, line up an agent where you live now so both timelines work together.
- Plan a scouting trip with our trip planner — or tour homes with us on live video.
4–6 weeks before
- Get moving quotes (and ask about summer heat precautions for belongings).
- Gather school, medical, and vet records if they apply to your household.
- Set up utilities: power (usually NV Energy), water (your district or city), gas, trash, and internet.
- Get Nevada homeowners and auto insurance quotes.
Moving week
- Do a final walkthrough of your new home (and new-construction punch list if applicable).
- Change your address with USPS, banks, and subscriptions.
- In summer, schedule the move early in the day and keep heat-sensitive items with you.
Your first 30 days as a Nevada resident
- Driver's license: get your Nevada driver's license within 30 days of becoming a resident.
- Vehicle registration: register your vehicles in Nevada within 30 days, too. Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN inspection at a DMV office, and most Clark County vehicles need a smog check first. Book DMV appointments early — slots fill up.
- Register to vote at your new address.
- File the property-tax abatement paperwork if your home is your primary residence (ask us — it's easy to miss).
Requirements change — always confirm current rules with the Nevada DMV and Clark County.
